National Francophone Immigration Week: Aminata Konaté
For National Francophone Immigration Week we’re profiling four Francophone immigrants who chose the NWT as their new home.

Aminata Konaté (Mali) Catering

Originally from Mali, Aminata has lived in Yellowknife since 2018. She noticed that while grocers offer many different products on shelves, there was a gap in the market for juices made from exotic reagents. Not long after, she opened her business “My African Cuisine” specializing in preparing and catering delicious meals, juices and sauces made from fresh and exotic products.

Aminata wants to offer consumers the chance to discover or rediscover new and healthy flavours – at affordable prices. She makes juices from many different products like ginger, hibiscus, tamarind and baobab fruit and makes vegetable, spicy mango and spicy garlic sauces.

One of the challenges Aminata has faced is not having access to a local food centre that would allow her to buy in large volumes and realize economies of scale. Nevertheless, My African Cuisine continues to build trust with its customers and is now catering larger events such as the Overlander Marathon.

From November 7 to 13, 2021, Canada celebrated National Francophone Immigration Week, an initiative of the Fédération des communautés francophones et acadienne (FCFA) du Canada. To mark the occasion, the Conseil de développement économique des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (CDÉTNO) and the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) are honouring four Francophone immigrants who chose the Northwest Territories as their new home.
